How we make walk-in wardrobes for Barking and Dagenham

Some people want doors on everything; others like open shelves and rails. Doors give a tidy, finished look and help keep dust away, while open storage lets you see everything at once. The choice is yours, and we will go through it when we measure. Typical reasons to get in touch are hanging for coats, dresses and shirts and a calmer, clearer bedroom, and the answer is made in our workshop from MDF made to resist moisture and birch plywood, then spray-painted or hand-painted.

With the carcasses fixed and level, any doors go on and any drawers or lids are fitted. Each one is adjusted until the gaps are even and it closes cleanly, then checked again. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the room and the design, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. First, you tell us about the space and how you dress. It could be a spare room, a box room or part of a bedroom.
  2. We come to measure the room and go through how the space should work, with shoe storage and a dressing table if you’d like them.
  3. We send a quote that sets out the layout, materials and finish.
  4. We build the carcasses, drawers and shelves in our workshop, using moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the walk-in wardrobe in your home, scribed to the walls and set level.

How our quotes work

Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Bigger pieces use more board and take longer to make and fit, so size comes first. After that, the number of doors and drawers, the internal fittings and the finish all play a part.

Around Barking

Our area takes in the homes around Mayesbrook Park, Greatfields School and The Barking Dog pub, among other places. Barking’s nearest station is Barking station, about 0.8 miles north-west of the centre. Walk-in wardrobes across Barking and Dagenham: local notes

If your bedroom in Barking and Dagenham has a chimney breast, the alcoves either side are natural places for storage. In rooms without one, a full wall of storage often works best. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

The biggest shares of homes in Barking and Dagenham were built between 1919 and 1939 (about 50%) and since 2000 (about 20%), going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. We take that into account at the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 50% of homes in Barking and Dagenham date from between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. About 42% of households in Barking and Dagenham live in terraced houses, based on Census 2021. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.

Barking and Dagenham is part of the area we cover, which takes in all 32 boroughs and the City. Let us know about access and parking when you first get in touch.

Barking: If your home is as old as some of the listed buildings nearby, like Eastbury Manor House, original features like shutters, panelling and fireplaces are worth designing around. If your own home is listed, check with the council before fixing into original features. For a flat near Barking station, each piece is planned so it can be carried up and joined together in the room.

Honest limits

Electrics, plumbing, gas, plastering and structural work aren’t part of what we do. Please bear these in mind too:

  • Lighting and wiring, which are for your electrician
  • Lease checks, which are for you and your building’s managers
  • Making good walls and ceilings

Boards, parts and paint

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting can be done in your home after fitting. It’s easy to touch up later.

Moisture-resistant MDF

On a cooler external wall, moisture-resistant MDF is a sensible choice, with ventilation allowed for.

Before and after fitting day

Because fitted furniture stays put, a little upkeep goes a long way. A few pointers help:

  • Deal with any damp walls first
  • Consider a mix of doors and open shelves
  • Think about where shoes and bags will go
  • Plan lighting with your electrician

If a hand-painted door gets a knock, it can be touched in. A spray finish gives a smooth surface that wipes clean.

It helps to know what you will keep before we measure. We plan the layout around your clothes, so it is worth having a sort-out first.

Flats, leases and landlords

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, and that often means a shared hallway and a tight turn on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, once we have measured the way in.

If the property is let, we’ll need access agreed with the tenants, at times that suit them. An agent can arrange access for you, and the written quote can go to whoever needs it.

The problems walk-in wardrobes solve

The most common reason is simply running out of wardrobe space. Clothes are squashed together and shoes pile up. A dressing room spreads it all out so you can see it.

These come up often when people first get in touch:

  • The right mix of long and short hanging
  • Turning a box room into a dressing room
  • A side each for a couple
  • A dressing area in part of a bedroom

Common questions about walk-in wardrobes

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

We need access, so someone has to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. A lease can require consent for alterations. We can’t advise on leases, so please check yours.

What do you do at the measuring visit?

We measure the space and discuss the design, materials and finish. We also check the walls and floors and note radiators, sockets and other things in the way, then send a written quote.

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling, give us a good idea of the space, particularly with rough sizes. To send them, get in touch through our contact form.

Is the furniture spray painted or hand painted?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

How do you get the furniture up the stairs?

Getting it in is planned at the measuring visit. The stairs, landings, any lift and the doorways are measured, and the furniture is made in sections sized to get through.

Will you wire in lights?

No, wiring is for your electrician. We make and fit the furniture and plan space for the lighting you want.
