Wall Beds across Tower Hamlets

How we make wall beds for Tower Hamlets

The cabinet is made from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray painted in our workshop or hand painted. From the front, the folded bed can look like a set of tall cupboards, so the room doesn’t read as a bedroom by day. We make wall beds from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about hiding the bed when it’s not in use and storage built around a fold-down bed.

You won’t need to do much on the day. We need someone to let us in at the start, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the design visit. After that, it is over to us: the floors are covered, the sections come in and the fitting begins. How long fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and the fitting days are agreed in your quote.

  1. You get in touch and describe the room.
  2. We visit to measure the room and the way in, from the front door to the room itself. Mention parking as well, since vans often need a permit or a paid bay.
  3. We send a quote in writing.
  4. The cabinet is made at our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, in sections sized for the route.
  5. We carry the sections in, assemble them and fix the mechanism as its maker specifies.

Homes across Tower Hamlets and their bedrooms

We make wall beds for homes across Tower Hamlets, in Whitechapel, Spitalfields and Tower Hill and beyond. External walls can be colder than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation. Each wall is checked so the fixings suit it.

In Tower Hamlets, the largest groups of homes date from the years since 2000 (about 45%) and between 1973 and 1999 (about 20%), according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Knowing roughly when a home was built helps, because walls and fixings change from one era to the next. More than a third of the homes in Tower Hamlets (about 45%) were built since 2000, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Bedrooms in homes built since 2000 tend to be compact, with stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Purpose-built flats are home to about 81% of households in Tower Hamlets, based on Census 2021. In a block, each section is sized to get up the stairs or into the lift and through the door. Building management rules on lifts, deliveries and working hours are worth checking early.

Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It helps to tell us about parking during the design visit.

Whitechapel: Living in a block of flats near Whitechapel station? Then the lift, the stair turns and the front door all set the largest piece that can come in. If your children go to Canon Barnett Primary School or a school nearby, wall beds in a child’s room can be planned so the inside layout changes as they grow.

Flats, blocks and rented homes

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We cannot give advice on leases.

Mansion blocks and purpose-built blocks often have house rules about lifts, entry systems and when trades can come in. Let us know about them at the design visit, so fitting day is planned around them.

What affects the cost of wall beds

When we put a quote together, we consider:

  • The number of doors and drawers
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls
  • Parking near your home
  • The overall size of the piece

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay. Let us know about parking at the design visit, so it can be planned.

What we need to know

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any
  • Pictures of the whole wall or room, including the floor and ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some pictures if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

Bespoke or off-the-shelf?

It’s worth being honest about cost: off-the-shelf furniture normally costs less up front. Bespoke earns its place where the room is tricky, space is tight or you want the furniture to look part of the house.

Shop-bought shelves can sag over a long span. Span, depth and the weight on it decide whether a shelf sags, so a long run needs a thicker shelf, a stiffening lip or a support. That is something we plan for in the design.

What prompts wall beds

Some people are tired of sofa beds. With a wall bed, guests sleep on a real mattress, on a proper frame.

Wall beds can help with:

  • A living room with a bed that folds away
  • A bed that looks like cupboards by day
  • Shelves or a desk around the bed
  • A playroom that can sleep visitors

Looking after your furniture

Fitted furniture is part of the room, so it is worth looking after. A few pointers help:

  • Check there’s room for the bed to fold down
  • Consider how many people will sleep in it
  • Follow the mechanism maker’s mattress guidance
  • Let us know about the wall’s construction

Before you first use the bed, read the mechanism maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it. Lower it steadily and keep the space in front clear, and don’t let children play with it.

Leasehold flats can have rules on alterations, so check your lease early. We can’t advise on your lease.

Questions from Tower Hamlets

Do you work in Tower Hamlets?

Yes, we do. We work across Tower Hamlets, and the process is the same everywhere we go.

How long does fitting take?

The time the fitting takes depends on the bed, the cabinets and the wall it fixes to, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

What if my walls and floors are out of level?

It’s something we deal with all the time. We trim the edges to follow the wall and level the base, so there are no gaps at the sides.

Is a wall bed safe for everyday use?

A wall bed is designed to be used regularly when fixed and used as its maker specifies. We fix the mechanism securely to a sound wall or floor, and you should follow the maker’s guidance on lowering and lifting it.

What does a wall bed cost?

There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space. Size, storage and finish all affect the price. To arrange a design visit, use our contact form.

Is a mattress included with the wall bed?

The mechanism maker sets limits on mattress size and weight. We’ll explain its limits during the design visit, so you can pick the right one.

Can I send pictures before the visit?

Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit, along with rough sizes. It’s useful to show radiators, sockets and anything else on the wall.
