Built-in bookshelves across Camden: what to expect

Shelf depth depends on what you keep. Paperbacks sit happily on shallow shelves, while art books, atlases and records need more. Too deep, and paperbacks get lost at the back; too shallow, and big books hang over the edge. A common answer is deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower ones above. Typical reasons to get in touch are books with nowhere left to go and shelves that suit a period room; the furniture is made from moisture-resistant MDF and strong birch plywood, with a painted finish.

If anything comes up on the day, just ask. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. How long fitting takes depends on how much shelving there is and how many cupboards sit below it, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.

  1. You describe the room and what the shelves will hold.
  2. A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout.
  3. We put the design, materials and finish into a quote in writing. Read it through and ask us anything.
  4. Once you’re happy, the shelving is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. The bookshelves are fitted in your home, ready for your books. Everything is levelled and scribed to the walls as it goes in.

What goes into your quote

In London, parking can affect the price. Much of London is covered by controlled parking zones, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.

What you get with us

  • Spray painted or hand painted, in the colour you choose
  • Workshop-made and fitted by us
  • Fitted tight to walls that are not straight
  • Built around your room

How to get a quote

If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that’s fine, and we can work it out together. At the design visit, we measure up and talk the design through with you, and the written quote then sets it out. To arrange a visit, get in touch through our contact form.

Around St Pancras

Our area takes in the homes around Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School, Lumen United Reformed Church and Pilsudski Institute of London. You’ll also find Lincoln's Inn Fields (0.7 miles south), St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School (a few minutes’ walk south), City Academy (within half a mile south-east) and Calthorpe Arms Public House (less than half a mile south-east). For rail, the closest station is London Kings Cross station, roughly 0.5 miles north-west. Nearby you’ll also find Foundling Museum (close by, under half a mile west) and Montfichet's Tower (1.1 miles south-east). Open spaces near St Pancras include Barnsbury Wood and Ludgate Hill.

Homes across Camden and their living rooms

Across Camden, including St Pancras, Hampstead and West End, homes come in every age and type. In older houses, the alcoves beside a chimney breast are the natural place for built-in bookshelves; in newer ones, a full wall often works better. Each design starts by measuring the room.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 49% of the housing in Camden, with about 16% built between 1945 and 1972, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 49% of homes in Camden were built before 1919, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Houses of that age normally have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use, with shelves sized so they don’t sag under books. About 28% of households in Camden live in flats in converted or shared houses, the 2021 Census shows. In a converted house, rooms can be odd shapes, with new partitions meeting old walls, and the way in often goes up shared stairs. A lease can require consent for alterations, so it’s worth checking yours first.

We cover the whole of London, so homes in Camden are well within our area. If you’re unsure about access or parking, mention it when you get in touch.

St Pancras: For a family home near St George the Martyr Church of England Primary School, shelving with deep cupboards below keeps books, games and school things in one place. If your home is one of the older houses near Lumen United Reformed Church, picture rails and cornices give built-in bookshelves a line to finish at.

Where other trades come in

We’d rather be clear about where our work stops:

  • Decorating the rest of the room
  • Electrical work, such as new sockets or switches, which is for your electrician
  • Plastering, which is a plasterer’s job

What it’s made from

Plinths and scribe strips

The plinth raises the shelving and hides a sloping floor. It can line up with the skirting.

Moisture-resistant MDF

MDF gives crisp edges and smooth faces, ready for spray or hand painting. We use the moisture-resistant grade for fitted work.

Tips worth knowing

The finish lasts best with a little care. These practical tips help:

  • Decide whether you want fixed shelves, adjustable shelves or both
  • Check the heights of art books, files and records
  • Ask your electrician about sockets early
  • Think about whether a radiator should move before fitting

Keep a record of the colour for future touch-ups. Hand-painted finishes are the easiest to touch up in place.

Use mats under plants and vases on painted shelves to avoid water marks. Wipe up spills straight away.

Flats, leases and landlords

Blocks of flats often have their own rules on lift bookings, entry systems and times for trades. Let us know about them at the measuring visit, and we’ll plan the fitting around them.

Landlords furnishing a let use fitted furniture too, often to make the most of a small or tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

What affects the cost of built-in bookshelves

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • The internal fittings
  • How square the room is
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Access to the room, like stairs, lifts and narrow halls

There’s no price list, because every piece is designed for one room. We measure up, discuss the design and send a quote in writing. To start, message us from the contact page.

What we need to know

Here’s what helps us most when you get in touch:

  • Rough sizes, even if they’re only to the nearest few centimetres
  • Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • What the furniture needs to hold

It helps to see the room before we come. A few pictures showing the walls, the corners and where the ceiling meets them give us a good feel for the space. To send them over, tell us about the room on our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Common questions about built-in bookshelves

Do built-in bookshelves have adjustable shelves?

It’s your choice: fixed, adjustable or a mix. Fixed shelves add stiffness to the bookcase, and adjustable ones let the spacing change. A mix often works best.

Will you paint the walls around the furniture?

No. We do not plaster or decorate, so any work on the walls is for a plasterer or decorator. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

How do you decide on shelf depth?

The depth is set around your books. Deeper cupboards or shelves at the bottom and shallower shelves above is a common layout.

Who chooses the colour?

You choose it. We agree the colour with you, and it is set out in the quote.

Can you make built-in bookshelves for a home in Camden?

Yes. Our area is the whole of London: every borough and the City of London, Camden included.

Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?

Possibly. Leases vary, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on, so it is worth checking before fitting day.

How long will the fitting take?

How long fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and your quote sets out the fitting days. We’ll talk you through what to expect beforehand.
