Fitted wardrobes in Newham: how it works
Some bedrooms suit wardrobes that wrap around the bed, with cupboards each side and a run of storage above the headboard. In other rooms, the units sit either side of a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. The layout is planned so the room doesn’t feel boxed in. We make fitted wardrobes from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish, and people most often get in touch about not enough hanging space and a tight bedroom where doors get in the way.
At the end, we tidy up. Before we leave, we go over the finished piece together and answer any questions. How long fitting takes depends on how many wardrobes there are and how the room is shaped, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.
- You describe the bedroom and the storage you need. A rough sketch of the room helps if you have one.
- A design visit follows, where we measure and agree the layout, with your clothes in mind.
- We put the design, materials and finish into a written quote. It lists what’s inside each wardrobe as well as the doors.
- We then make the wardrobes in our workshop.
- We bring them to your home and fit them in place. We adjust the doors so they hang and close evenly.
How our quotes work
Rooms that aren’t square take more work: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it.

How to get a quote
If you already have something in mind, tell us; if you don’t, that is fine, and we can work it out together. The design is talked through at the visit, once we’ve measured, and the written quote that follows sets it out. To start, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Bedroom storage across Newham
Homes across Newham, Plaistow, Stratford and Canning Town among them, often have one bedroom that has to do two jobs. The design can help one room work two ways.
The biggest shares of homes in Newham were built before 1919 (about 37%) and since 2000 (about 29%), in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 29% of homes in Newham were built since 2000, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. Newer homes often have compact bedrooms with plasterboard stud walls, so fitted pieces use the full height and are fixed into the studs. Terraced houses are home to about 31% of households in Newham, the 2021 Census shows. Terraced houses often have a narrow back bedroom and alcoves either side of a chimney breast, which suit fitted furniture.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. It’s useful to tell us about parking during the design visit.
Plaistow: For a family home near Kaizen Primary School, a mix of drawers and shelves copes with school uniform as well as everything else. If you live near Keir Hardie Park, fitted wardrobes are usually planned on the walls away from the window, so the light and the view stay.
What affects the cost of fitted wardrobes
The price for your room depends on:
- Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors
- The overall size of the piece
- What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
- How easy it is to get the furniture into the room
What goes inside matters as much as the outside: drawers take more making than shelves, and each rail, divider or pull-out adds to the work. We will talk through what you need inside at the measuring visit, and the quote follows.
Helping us understand the room
These details help when you get in touch:
- How you want to use the space
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
- The postcode, so we can plan the visit
- Anything fixed to the wall that the furniture needs to work around
A quote begins with some details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and discuss the design, then send a quote in writing.
Boards, parts and paint
Plinths and scribe strips
Scribing means trimming edges on site to follow the walls and ceiling. This closes the gaps a straight wardrobe would leave in an older room.
Moisture-resistant MDF
Tall doors need a stable material. MDF gives a flat, smooth surface that paints well.
When is bespoke worth it?
A confident DIYer can manage simple shelves or a standard wardrobe in a square room. Sloping ceilings, uneven floors and lath-and-plaster walls make it harder, because scribing and the right fixings start to matter.
Off-the-shelf cupboards come in fixed sizes, so there’s typically a gap left over at the top or at one end. Fitted furniture is made to the room’s measurements, so it can run to the ceiling and fill the width.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
Getting a big standalone wardrobe into a flat or up a tight stair can be difficult. We make fitted wardrobes in sections sized to the route into your home, then put together in the room.
Questions to ask before you hire anyone
- Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure
- How parking will work on your street
- Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
- Is it spray painted or hand painted?
Flats, leases and landlords
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.
In conversions and newer blocks, many internal walls are timber or metal stud with plasterboard. Fixings are chosen to suit whatever the wall is made of, which we check at the design visit.
Questions from Newham
How do I get started?
Simply tell us about the room on our contact form. It helps to send rough sizes and a few pictures, and then we arrange a visit to measure and talk through the design.
Does fitted furniture need planning permission?
Not normally. Conservation areas mostly control changes to the outside, and furniture inside a house does not normally need it. Listed buildings are different: check with the council’s conservation officer first.
Will you travel outside London?
No. We work in London and nowhere else, across all the boroughs and the City of London.
How is the inside of the wardrobe planned?
You choose the mix of hanging, shelves and drawers. It can include long and double hanging, shelves, drawers and space for shoes. We plan it with you when we visit.
Should I send pictures?
Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.
How is the furniture painted?
There are two choices: a spray finish from the workshop, which is smooth and even, or hand painting, which can be done in your home. The finish is agreed in your quote.
What happens at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. Access and parking are worth talking about too.
