Fitted Wardrobes across Harrow

How we make fitted wardrobes for Harrow

Wardrobes can be built around a bed, with tall cupboards either side and storage bridging over the headboard. Others work around a window, sometimes with a dressing table or a window seat between them. We plan the layout so the room still feels open. Most enquiries start with bedroom alcoves that could hold clothes and standard wardrobes that don’t fill the wall, and the answer is made in our workshop from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted.

When the fitting is done, we tidy the room and take up the floor coverings. Before we go, we look over the finished furniture with you. The time the fitting takes depends on the size of the wardrobes and the number of doors, and your quote sets out the fitting days.

  1. You get in touch about fitted wardrobes for your bedroom, with a rough idea of what you need to hang and fold.
  2. We visit to measure up and plan the doors, rails, shelves and drawers with you. Hinged or sliding doors are part of that conversation.
  3. You receive a quote setting out the design and the paint finish.
  4. The wardrobes are made in sections in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the wardrobes go in, are levelled and scribed, and the doors are hung.

How our quotes work

How it is painted is part of the price: spray painting happens in the workshop, and hand painting can be done in your home. The written quote reflects your choice, along with the size and fittings.

Fitted wardrobes for homes across Harrow

Many older bedrooms across Harrow keep a chimney breast with an alcove on each side. Where there is not one, fitted wardrobes can run along a full wall instead. Each design is scribed and levelled on site.

In Harrow, the largest groups of homes date from between 1919 and 1939 (about 52%) and the years since 2000 (about 15%), on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than half of the homes in Harrow (about 52%) date from between 1919 and 1939, on the Valuation Office Agency’s council tax figures for 2025. Many interwar houses have a small room over the stairs, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 48% of households in Harrow, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that usually has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.

We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Harrow is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and talk through the design.

Harrow: If you live in a period home close to Church of St Peter, tall ceilings give fitted wardrobes room to reach the cornice. Headstone Manor, about 1.4 miles north, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. If your own home is a period one, a bedroom chimney breast and its alcoves often shape where fitted wardrobes go.

Where other trades come in

Not everything around fitted wardrobes is carpentry, from an electrician to a plumber or an engineer on the Gas Safe Register. Here is what to bear in mind:

  • The loft conversion itself, which is building work under Building Regulations
  • Curing damp, which needs the right specialist
  • Decorating or plastering the room

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

Off-the-shelf wardrobes are cheaper to buy and easy to take with you. That is a real advantage if you’re renting or moving soon. Fitted wardrobes stay with the room.

What to check before you book

  • Have they measured the stairs, lift and doorways?
  • Whether they can show you real projects they’ve done
  • How the furniture will be finished, and where
  • How they handle walls that aren’t straight

What it’s made from

Hand-painted finish

Hand painting lets you judge the colour in the room before the final coat. Joins and scribed edges are painted in the same coats.

Doors and drawer fronts

Door styles range from simple flat fronts to panelled ones. They’re painted to match or contrast with the walls.

Before and after fitting day

A few practical points help before and after fitting day. Here are some things worth bearing in mind:

  • List the things that will not hang, like jumpers and shoes
  • Look at whether your lease needs consent for alterations
  • Count how much long hanging and short hanging you need
  • Move furniture away from the wardrobe wall in advance

Painted wardrobe doors only need a soft cloth that’s barely damp. Skip scouring pads and harsh cleaners, which can mark the finish.

Do not overload a single rail or shelf. Rails and shelves are planned for normal use, so mention anything unusually heavy when we plan.

What it costs

There’s no set price, because there is no set room. What affects it comes down to:

  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • What goes inside: rails, shelves, drawers and dividers
  • The width and height of the space
  • Awkward walls, sloping ceilings and uneven floors

We quote each job for the room it’s going into, after the design visit. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

Before the design visit

To help us picture the room, please include:

  • What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
  • Radiators, sockets, pipes or meters on or near the wall
  • How you want to use the space
  • Pictures of styles you like, if you have any

Your quote is written for your room once we’ve visited and measured. Each room is different, so we quote after seeing it. To arrange a visit, tell us about the room on our contact form.

Common questions about fitted wardrobes

Can I send photos ahead of the visit?

Yes, they help. A few pictures of the room, from floor to ceiling, tell us a lot. To send them, message us from the contact page.

Will you travel outside London?

No. Our work is in London only: every London borough and the City of London.

Which is better for fitted wardrobes, hinged or sliding doors?

The space in front of the wardrobe normally decides it. If a bed or a door is close, sliding doors can make more sense. We look at it with you when we measure.

Do I need to be in when you fit?

Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It also helps to have someone around at the end, so we can go over the finished furniture together.

Do I need permission in a conservation area?

Typically not. Inside a house, fitted furniture does not normally need planning permission. Listed buildings can require listed building consent for works that affect their character, so check with the council first.

Where is the furniture made?

Each piece is built in our workshop for the room it is going into, then fitted in your home. We use moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.

Which boards do you build with?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.
