Alcove units across Harrow: what to expect

We work across London, including Harrow. The first step is a design visit to measure the alcoves and agree the layout. Then you receive a quote; the units are then made at our workshop and fitted in your home. Most enquiries start with alcoves that aren’t square and everyday clutter left on show, and the answer is made at our workshop from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

Before anything is fixed, we set the furniture level. Floors are often out of level, so adjustable feet or a plinth take up the difference. Only then is it fixed to the wall, with fixings chosen to suit brick, lath and plaster or plasterboard.

  1. You let us know which room it is and roughly what you’d like in the alcoves.
  2. At the design visit, we measure both alcoves, check the walls and look at the skirting and picture rail.
  3. We send a quote in writing setting out the layout, materials and finish. If anything needs changing, just tell us.
  4. The cupboards and shelves are then built in our workshop.
  5. Fitting day: the units go in, are scribed to the alcoves and levelled on a plinth or feet.

How our quotes work

No two rooms cost the same to furnish, because size, layout and finish change from job to job. A spray finish and a hand-painted finish involve different work, and that shows in the price. The figure comes in your written quote after the design visit.

Alcove units for homes across Harrow

Homes across Harrow, Stanmore, Hatch End and Harrow Weald included, have living rooms of every shape. Alcove units are designed for the one you have, with cable routes and ventilation for any screen or set-top boxes planned in. The carcasses are moisture-resistant MDF or birch plywood.

About 52% of the homes in Harrow went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 15% since 2000, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Each era brings its own kind of wall, ceiling height and floor, so it shapes the design from the first measurement. About 52% of homes in Harrow date from between 1919 and 1939, according to Valuation Office Agency council tax figures (2025). Interwar front rooms typically have a bay at the front and a chimney breast on the side wall, and alcove units are planned around both. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 48% of households in Harrow, based on Census 2021. In a semi or detached house, a driveway, where there is one, can make unloading easier.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so we look at both at the measuring visit.

Harrow: If you live near Northwick Park, alcove units can be arranged to keep the window and the light clear. If you live in a flat close to Harrow-on-the-Hill station, alcove units are made in sections sized for the stairs, landings and lift, so measuring the route matters as much as measuring the room.

Flats, conversions and lettings

Many London terraces have been converted into flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. Each section is sized with that in mind, once we have measured the way in.

Leaseholders should check the lease before anything is fixed to the walls. A lease can require consent from the building owner for alterations, and that is best sorted before fitting day. We can’t advise on your lease, so check it yourself or ask your managing agent.

Honest limits

Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, so these points are worth knowing:

  • Finding and fixing the cause of damp
  • Making good damaged walls before fitting
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

Made for the room, or bought in a box?

The depth of an alcove is set by the chimney breast. A shop-bought cabinet may stick out past the chimney breast or leave a deep gap behind it. Bespoke units are made to the depth you want, whether that is flush with the breast or a little shallower.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • How doors and drawers are fitted
  • Where they’ll park and unload
  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • Whether you’ll get a quote in writing, not just a figure

Pricing alcove units in Harrow

A few things affect what fitted furniture costs:

  • How many doors and drawers there are
  • The overall size of the piece
  • Parking and unloading on your street
  • Whether you choose a spray or hand-painted finish

The price comes in a written quote, worked out from the measurements and the design you choose. Size, the number of doors and drawers and the internal fittings make the biggest difference to the price.

What we need to know

Ahead of the design visit, we will usually ask about:

  • Rough sizes: width, height and depth
  • Pictures showing the full wall, from floor to ceiling
  • The postcode, so we can plan the visit
  • What the furniture needs to hold

A quote begins with a few details from you: the room, rough measurements and some photos if you have them. To send them, fill in our short enquiry form. We will then arrange a design visit and follow it with a quote in writing.

What it’s made from

Moisture-resistant MDF

In an alcove unit, MDF gives smooth doors and tidy edges that take a spray or hand-painted finish evenly. Its moisture-resistant grade is a sensible choice beside a chimney breast.

Shelves

Shelf heights are planned around your things, from paperbacks to tall art books. A shallower top shelf can keep things within reach.

Your questions about alcove units in Harrow

Will alcove units block the chimney vent?

We plan alcove units so any chimney vent stays clear. Even a blocked chimney needs some ventilation to help keep damp away and we design around it.

What paint finish can I have on alcove units?

We offer spray painting in the workshop and hand painting on site. A sprayed finish is very smooth and even; a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later. We talk through both during the design visit.

Can you build alcove units for alcoves that aren’t square?

Yes. Each alcove is measured at the design visit, make the units in our workshop and trim the edges on site to meet the wall, so there are no tricky gaps.

Do I need to be at home on fitting day?

Someone needs to be there to let us in. After that, you don’t need to stay in the room, but it helps to be around at the end.

Which boards do you build with?

We build with moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, depending on the part and the design. Your quote sets out the materials.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It needs a little planning: leaving ventilation behind and inside helps stop condensation. Damp treatment is not something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.

Can you come on a Saturday?

Yes, Saturdays are possible by prior arrangement. Just mention it when you get in touch.
