About wall beds in Merton
A wall bed folds up into a fitted cabinet when you don’t need it and is lowered again at night. It means a room can work as more than a bedroom, so a guest room can double as a study or playroom. We make the cabinet for your room and paint it in a colour you choose. We make wall beds from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, spray-painted or hand-painted, and the usual reasons to get in touch are a real mattress for visitors and a study that doubles as a spare room.
The last stage of the day is the finish. With a spray finish from the workshop, there is typically only filling and touching up to do in the room; if you chose hand painting, that can be done in the room once the furniture is fitted. The finish is always the one agreed in your quote.
- We start with how the room is used and who’ll sleep there. The bed can sit among shelves or beside a desk.
- At the design visit we measure the room and check the wall and floor, as the bed must be fixed securely.
- A quote follows, setting out the design and finish.
- We build and finish everything in our workshop.
- We fit it in your home, with the mechanism fixed as its maker specifies.
How our quotes work
Getting to the room affects the job as well. Narrow halls, tight stairs or a small lift may mean the furniture is made in more sections, which the quote allows for. There’s no price list: each design is priced in writing after we’ve seen the space.

How to get a quote
Pictures help us understand the room before we visit. Pictures of the whole wall, the corners and the ceiling line tell us a lot about the space. To share them, use our contact form, and we will arrange a design visit.

Homes across Merton and their bedrooms
Across Merton, including Wimbledon, Colliers Wood and Morden, bedrooms come in every size. Each design uses the room’s own widths and height. Hanging, shelves and drawers inside are arranged around what you store.
About 37% of the homes in Merton went up between 1919 and 1939, and about 27% before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account at the measuring visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 37% of homes in Merton date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses from that era often have a box room over the stairs, with a raised bulkhead in the floor, a good spot for fitted furniture built around the bulkhead. Terraced houses are home to about 36% of households in Merton, going by Census 2021 figures from the ONS. London terraces usually have a small back bedroom and alcoves in the main bedroom, which suit fitted furniture.
We work across all 32 London boroughs and the City of London, and Merton is part of that. Every job starts the same way, with a design visit to measure and discuss the design.
Wimbledon: Southside House, about 1.1 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area. For a period home anywhere nearby, solid external walls can be cold, so ventilation behind wall beds is part of the design. If you live near Cannizaro Park, morning light matters, so tall pieces go where they won’t shade the window.
Where other trades come in
We design, make and fit the furniture. That means:
- Making good the walls after other work
- Electrical work for reading lights
- Choosing a mattress for you
Flats, leases and landlords
We also make and fit furniture for landlords furnishing a let, as it makes good use of an tricky room. The materials are the same as for any home: moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood, finished by spray or by hand.
A lot of London’s terraced houses are now converted flats, which often brings a shared hall and tight turns on the stairs. We plan the size of each section around it, after measuring the route at the measuring visit.
What it is made from
Bed mechanism housing
We build the housing to suit the mechanism and fix it as the maker specifies. The front can look like a set of cupboards.
Shelves
We size each shelf for its span and load.
Before and after fitting day
Getting the most from wall beds starts with the planning and carries on after fitting day. These are worth keeping in mind:
- Decide who the bed is mainly for
- Plan where chairs and desks will sit
- Mention if the wall is a stud wall
- Check mattress size and weight limits
Should the bed start to move differently, stop and let us know. Don’t try to adjust the mechanism yourself unless its maker says you can.
If you live in a leasehold flat, check your lease before fixing furniture to the walls. We can’t advise on your lease.
Made for the room, or bought in a box?
A normal bed has nothing to fix to the wall, and that has its appeal. Where the room needs to be more than a bedroom, a wall bed earns its place every day.
Before you hire any carpenter
- Will the quote be in writing?
- Whether the finish is set out in the quote
- Which materials they’ll use, named in the quote
- Whether the route into your home has been checked
Questions we’re often asked
What if the wall is cold or damp?
It needs a little planning: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. Damp treatment isn’t something we do, so any damp needs sorting first.
Can I send pictures ahead of the visit?
Yes. Pictures help us understand the room before the design visit. Show anything the furniture has to work around, such as radiators or sockets.
How are wall beds priced?
Prices are quoted for your room, once we’ve measured and talked through the design. Each wall bed is different, so we price it after measuring. To get started, message us from the contact page.
What do you do at the measuring visit?
We take full measurements, look at the walls and floors and work through the design together. We will also ask about access and parking.
What finishes do you offer?
You can choose between two finishes: spray painted or hand painted. A spray finish is smooth and even, while a hand-painted one is easy to touch up later.
Can you fit a wall bed to a stud wall?
We check that during the design visit. Different walls need different fixings, and the mechanism maker sets out what’s required.
Do I get to choose the colour?
You choose it, and we agree it with you before the furniture is finished. Spray and hand-painted finishes both use the colour you’ve chosen.
