About built-in bookshelves in Waltham Forest

Books weigh a lot, and a wall of them puts real load on the fixings. Each bookcase is fixed with fixings chosen for the wall, whether that’s solid brick, lath and plaster or a stud wall. If a wall is weak or the plaster is loose, it is best put right before fitting. Most enquiries start with shelving behind a desk for books and files and shelves deep enough for large books; the furniture is made from birch plywood and moisture-resistant MDF with a spray-painted or hand-painted finish.

There is not much for you to do on fitting day. Someone needs to let us in, and it helps to have the room cleared beforehand, as agreed at the measuring visit. From there, we protect the floors, bring the furniture in and get on with the fitting. How long the fitting takes depends on the size of the bookcase and the walls it’s fitted to, and the fitting days are set out in your quote.

  1. You get in touch with a few details about where the bookshelves will go.
  2. At the design visit we measure up and look at how the shelving meets the ceiling, the skirting and any door or window frame.
  3. A quote in writing follows, with the design, materials and finish.
  4. We build the shelving in sections in our workshop, from moisture-resistant MDF and birch plywood.
  5. We fit the shelving in your home, scribing the edges to follow the walls and ceiling.
  6. The finish is either sprayed in our workshop or hand-painted once the shelves are in place.

What goes into your quote

Awkward rooms take more time: walls that lean, floors that slope and sloping ceilings all mean more scribing and cutting. That’s reflected in the quote, which we write after seeing the room.

Living-room carpentry across Waltham Forest

We make built-in bookshelves for homes across Waltham Forest, in Walthamstow, Leyton and Chingford and beyond. The walls behind built-in bookshelves vary with the age of the home, so fixings are checked during the design visit. Shelf spans and depths are chosen so nothing bows.

Homes built before 1919 make up about 45% of the housing in Waltham Forest, with about 19% built between 1919 and 1939, in the VOA’s 2025 council tax stock figures. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. More than a third of the homes in Waltham Forest (about 45%) were built before 1919, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Houses of that age typically have alcoves, tall ceilings and picture rails, all of which shelving can use. About 35% of households in Waltham Forest live in terraced houses, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. Many London terraces have a chimney breast and alcoves in the main rooms, which suit built-in bookshelves built to their exact widths.

Getting furniture into a London home takes planning, from narrow halls to lifts and parking, so the way in is measured along with the room.

Walthamstow: For a family home near Greenleaf Primary School, low doors that small hands can open, with books and ornaments higher up, suit a busy family room. If your home is one of the older houses near Church of St Michael and All Angels, walls that bow and floors that slope are why built-in bookshelves are scribed to fit rather than pushed into place.

Is bespoke worth it?

Some flat-pack bookcases have long, thin shelves, so they bow once they’re full of books. We size each shelf for its span and load, with birch plywood, a stiffening lip or a support where needed.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone

  • Can you see real work of theirs?
  • How the doors are hung and adjusted
  • Who does any electrics, plumbing or gas work
  • Will the quote be in writing?

Materials and finishes

Birch plywood

Birch plywood is strong and holds screws well, so it’s a good choice for shelves that carry books. You can paint the edge or show the layers.

Spray-painted finish

A sprayed coat gets into corners and along edges, which suits shelving with lots of edges. The colour is agreed before we start.

Flats, conversions and leaseholders

Some blocks ask for notice before trades arrive, often through a building manager or concierge. If there is a lift, it may need booking, and its size matters when we plan the sections. Mention it when you get in touch.

If the property is let, we will need access agreed with the tenants. A letting agent can arrange this on a landlord’s behalf.

DIY, flat-pack or bespoke

If you are handy, a simple shelf or a standard wardrobe in a square room is a reasonable DIY job. It gets harder with sloping ceilings, out-of-level floors and lath-and-plaster walls, where scribing and fixings that suit the wall are important.

Cost matters, and it’s fair to say so: flat-pack is typically cheaper to buy. Bespoke makes more sense where the room is awkward, the space is valuable or you want the furniture to look built in.

Where other trades come in

As carpenters, we leave some work to other trades. It helps to know these before you plan the job:

  • Plumbing work around the shelves
  • Making good walls that can’t take fixings
  • Redecorating, which is for your decorator

Questions we’re often asked

Do you make good the walls afterwards?

No. We do not plaster or decorate. We finish the furniture itself, as set out in your quote.

Can the fitting be on a Saturday?

Yes, by prior arrangement. If a Saturday works better for you, say so when you contact us.

What finishes do you offer?

There are two options: spray painting, done in the workshop for a smooth, even finish, or hand painting, which can be done on site. The finish is agreed in your quote.

What if the wall is cold or damp?

It can be done with some care: ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps avoid condensation and mould. We do not treat damp, so any damp should be sorted before fitting day.

Do you work for landlords and letting agents?

Yes. The process is the same: a design visit, a written quote, then the furniture is made and fitted. If the property is let, the agent can arrange access with the tenants.

Do I choose the paint colour?

You do. The paint colour is agreed with you before anything is painted.

Can you build shelves over a doorway?

Yes. We can build shelving either side of a door or window with shelves above it. It makes good use of wall space that typically goes unused.
