Bespoke kitchens across Kingston upon Thames: what to expect
Islands work well in kitchens with room to walk around them. We check there’s comfortable space on every side, because a cramped island makes a kitchen harder to work in. Where space is tight, a peninsula or a longer run may suit better. We make kitchens from birch ply and moisture-resistant MDF, painted by hand or sprayed, and people most often get in touch about a dresser that suits a period house and extra cupboard space.
You’re welcome to ask questions while we work. The design, materials and finish were settled before anything was made, so fitting day is about putting it in place carefully. The time the fitting takes depends on how many units there are and how the room is laid out, and we confirm the fitting days in your quote.
- You get in touch with a few details about the kitchen. Say a little about the way you cook.
- The design visit covers measuring and planning the layout.
- You receive a written quote, setting out the cabinets, materials and finish.
- Everything is made at our workshop.
- We fit the kitchen in your home, while your plumber, a Gas Safe registered engineer and your electrician do the plumbing, gas and electrics.
What goes into your quote
Parking is part of the price picture in London. The boroughs run controlled parking zones across much of the city, so we may need a visitor permit, a paid bay or a suspended bay near your home. Let us know about parking during the design visit, so we can plan for it.
Why work with us
- Made in our workshop, then fitted in your home
- A design visit, then a written quote
- Made for your room, not a standard size
- Scribed to uneven walls
Getting a quote
Getting a quote starts with some details: which room it is, rough sizes and a couple of pictures if you can take them. To send them, get in touch through our contact form. After that, we arrange a visit to measure and go through the design, then send a quote in writing.

Bespoke kitchens for homes across Kingston upon Thames
From Surbiton, New Malden and Hampton Wick to the quieter streets, kitchens across Kingston upon Thames range from narrow galleys to open-plan rooms. The kitchen is designed for your room as it is, built around your chosen worktop, sink and appliances.
Homes built between 1919 and 1939 make up about 34% of the housing in Kingston upon Thames, with about 21% built before 1919, based on the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax data. We take that into account during the design visit, since older and newer walls take different fixings. About 34% of homes in Kingston upon Thames date from between 1919 and 1939, going by the Valuation Office Agency’s 2025 council tax figures. Many houses of that era have had the kitchen extended or knocked through, so the kitchen is designed for the room as it is now. Detached and semi-detached houses are home to about 44% of households in Kingston upon Thames, in the ONS Census 2021 figures. A house like that normally has more rooms to plan around than a flat, and sometimes a driveway that makes unloading easier.
Controlled parking zones cover large parts of London, and depending on the street, a visitor permit, a paid bay or a bay suspension through the council may be needed. Let us know about parking at the design visit.
Kingston upon Thames: Close to Canbury Gardens? A cupboard by the back door for boots and coats can be built in with the kitchen. If you live in a flat close to Kingston station, the route in is measured as well as the room, and the sections are sized to fit it.
Made-to-measure kitchens or ready-made?
Neither choice is right for every home. If the room is square and the budget is tight, a ready-made kitchen may do the job. Where the room is tricky, the house is older or you want a painted kitchen that suits it, bespoke is usually worth considering.
Before you hire any carpenter

- How the furniture will be finished, and where
- Which parts of the job need an electrician or a plumber

Materials and finishes
Spray-painted finish
For a sleek look, spray painting works well, and it is done before fitting.
Larder and dresser units
Dressers suit many period kitchens, and each is made for its wall.
Bespoke or off-the-shelf?
The real difference is in the fit: edges scribed to the wall, a level base on a sloping floor and a neat line where the furniture meets the ceiling. Off-the-shelf furniture can’t usually do that in an older room.
Where bespoke earns its keep is in rooms that aren’t square. In period homes, walls lean, floors slope and the alcoves on each side are often different widths, which leaves standard units with gaps at the sides and top.
What affects the price in Kingston upon Thames
Prices vary from room to room, for these reasons:
- How many doors and drawers there are
- Access to the room, such as stairs, lifts and narrow halls
- Where a van can park, like a permit bay or a bay suspension
- Walls and floors that are out of level or out of square
Awkward rooms take more time: uneven walls, sloping floors and angled ceilings all add scribing and cutting on site. The quote allows for it, written once we’ve measured up.
Before the design visit
Getting a few details early makes the visit more useful. If you can, send:
- Examples of the look you’re after
- How you want to use the space
- Where you live, with the postcode
- What kind of home it is, and which floor the room is on
Rough measurements are fine at the start. Everything is measured properly when we visit. To arrange it, tell us about the room on our contact form with a few details about the room. The written quote follows the visit.
What we do not do
Damp treatment and building work are for other specialists, and there are a few other limits too:
- Gas work, which is for a Gas Safe engineer
- Structural changes to the room
- Connecting sinks, taps and dishwashers
Common questions about bespoke kitchens
Can you fit cabinets to walls that are not straight?
Yes, it’s something we deal with all the time. Walls in older homes are rarely flat and floors often slope, so every cabinet is scribed and levelled.
Is an outside wall a problem for fitted furniture?
External walls can be colder and damper than internal ones, so ventilation behind and inside the furniture helps, which helps avoid condensation and mould. If there is damp, it should be sorted before anything is fitted.
How long will the kitchen take to fit?
It depends on the kitchen. The time the fitting takes depends on the kitchen’s size and how many other trades are involved, and your quote sets out the fitting days.
Do I need permission to fit furniture in a leasehold flat?
Possibly. It depends on your lease, and some require the building owner’s consent for alterations. Your lease is something we can’t advise on.
Do I need to be at home on fitting day?
Someone needs to let us in at the start of the day. It is good to have someone there at the end to look over the work with us.
Which worktops and appliances can I have?
The worktop, sink and appliances are the ones you choose, and we design the cabinets around them. The materials and finish are agreed in your quote.
Do you make good the walls afterwards?
No. Our work is the furniture, not the walls. The furniture is finished by spray or by hand, as agreed in your quote.
